Why Do I Need to Exercise?

It's a fair question.
If you're busy, tired and already have enough things to worry about, why should you spend your time exercising? Why give up an hour of your day to lift weights, get out of breath and make yourself uncomfortable?
Because exercise isn't just about getting fitter.
It's about being able to live your life.
Your Body Is Designed to Move
Our bodies are built to move, but modern life has made it incredibly easy not to.
We sit in the car, sit at work, sit on the sofa and spend hours looking at screens. We can order food, shop online and get almost anything delivered without having to move very far at all.
The problem is that our bodies still need movement.
Regular exercise helps maintain your strength, fitness, mobility and physical capacity. It keeps your body capable of doing the things you want it to do.
It's Not Just About Looking Good
One of the biggest misconceptions about exercise is that you need to do it to change how you look.
Of course, improving your body composition can be a fantastic goal, but it's only one small part of the picture.
Exercise can help you become stronger, improve your cardiovascular fitness, support your mental wellbeing and maintain your ability to do everyday activities.
Being fit isn't just about looking good in a mirror.
It's about being capable.
Think About Your Future Self
Imagine yourself 10, 20 or 30 years from now.
Would you rather be someone who has maintained their strength, fitness and mobility, or someone who has gradually become less active and less capable?
The decisions you make today influence the person you become later.
Every time you exercise, you're investing in your future self.
You're making it more likely that you'll be able to walk, run, lift, play, travel, garden and enjoy the things you love for as long as possible.
Strength Gives You Independence
Being strong isn't just useful for lifting weights in a gym.
Strength helps you carry your shopping, pick up your children, move furniture, climb stairs and deal with the physical demands of everyday life.
As we get older, maintaining strength becomes increasingly important. Losing strength and physical capability can gradually reduce your independence.
Training gives you an opportunity to fight against that decline.
Exercise Can Make You Feel Good
There's also something much simpler about exercise.
Feeling good feels good.
There is something rewarding about finishing a workout knowing you've done something positive for yourself. You can leave feeling energised, accomplished and proud of the work you've put in.
And while motivation won't always be there, creating a routine means you don't have to rely on motivation every time.
You simply turn up and get it done.
You Don't Need to Live in the Gym
Exercise doesn't need to take over your life.
You don't need to train seven days a week or spend hours in the gym every day.
A few well-structured sessions each week can make a huge difference, especially when combined with good nutrition, sleep and an active lifestyle.
That's why we believe your training should complement your life, not become your entire life.
So Why Do You Need to Exercise?
You exercise because you want to stay capable.
You exercise because you want to have the energy to play with your children.
You exercise because you want to enjoy your hobbies and holidays without feeling limited by your fitness.
You exercise because you want to stay strong as you get older.
You exercise because you want to look after the body that you're going to live in for the rest of your life.
And ultimately, you exercise because your health gives you the ability to enjoy everything else that life has to offer.
At CrossFit Shenley, that's what we're trying to help you achieve.
Not simply a better workout.
Not simply a lower number on the scales.
A stronger, healthier and more capable life.
