"If I Do CrossFit, I'll Get Injured"

This is one of the biggest concerns people have about CrossFit.
They've seen videos of people lifting huge weights, throwing themselves around and pushing through brutal workouts. They assume that's what every session looks like.
And if that's CrossFit, why would you want to do it?

But there's a big difference between what you see online and what good coaching actually looks like.
CrossFit Is About More Than Going Hard
At CrossFit Shenley, the goal isn't to get you lifting the heaviest weight possible or pushing yourself to breaking point.
It's to help you become stronger, fitter and more capable.
That starts with learning how to move well. We teach movements, develop technique and build confidence before gradually increasing the challenge when you're ready.
You don't need to lift heavy on day one. You don't need to do every movement you see on the board. And you certainly don't need to keep up with the person next to you.
Your training should be appropriate for you.
That's Why Coaching Matters
Every class at CrossFit Shenley is led by a coach.
We explain the workout, demonstrate the movements and help you understand what you're doing. We can adjust the weights, change movements and scale workouts to suit your current ability.
Someone who has never exercised before shouldn't necessarily be doing the same version of a workout as someone who has trained for ten years.
Good coaching recognises that.
Our job isn't just to tell you to work harder. It's to help you understand when to push, when to adjust and how to keep progressing.
But Don't People Get Injured Doing CrossFit?
Of course, injuries can happen.
They happen in CrossFit, running, football, weightlifting and plenty of other physical activities. No form of exercise can guarantee that you'll never get injured.
But that doesn't mean you should avoid exercise altogether.
The important questions are how you're coached, how your training progresses and whether the programme takes your ability and recovery into account.
We want you to train consistently for years, not have one heroic workout and spend the next month unable to move.
Think About It From Our Perspective
From a business point of view, if we injured everyone who walked through our doors, we wouldn't have a gym for very long!
But more importantly, that's not why we coach.
We want people to get stronger, improve their fitness, enjoy their training and build habits that last. We want members to make progress, feel confident and keep coming back.
That means looking after people, paying attention to technique and helping them train at the right level.
Your progress matters more than proving how tough you are in one workout.
You Don't Have to Be Fearless to Start
You might be nervous about lifting weights. You might be worried about your knees, your back or whether you're fit enough to keep up.
You don't have to ignore those concerns.
Tell your coach. Ask questions. Let us know what you've struggled with before.
We'll help you find an appropriate starting point and build from there. If something hurts or doesn't feel right, we'll help you adjust rather than expecting you to push through it.
Train for the Long Term
The goal isn't to destroy yourself every session.
It's to become a little stronger, a little fitter and a little more capable over time.
You should be able to enjoy your training, go to work, spend time with your family and get on with your life.
CrossFit doesn't have to mean reckless training.
With good coaching, appropriate scaling and sensible progression, it can be a way to build fitness that lasts.
You don't need to be worried about being the fittest person in the room. You just need a coach who knows how to help you get there.
That's what we're here for at CrossFit Shenley.
