How Do I Get Better?

One of the great things about
CrossFit is that your
fitness is trackable.

You’re not just turning up, sweating for an hour and hoping that something is happening. There are lots of different ways to measure your progress, whether that’s getting stronger, improving your fitness, learning a new movement or simply feeling better than you did a few months ago.
We Can Measure It
CrossFit uses benchmark workouts that you can come back to again and again.
Maybe you completed a workout six months ago and recorded your time. When it comes around again, you get the chance to retest it. You might finish faster, complete more reps or use a heavier weight.
That gives you something really valuable: proof that you’re improving.
The same goes for strength. We track lifts, reps and loads so you can see where you started and where you are now.
Seeing that your squat has gone from 60kg to 80kg, or that you can now do movements that you couldn't do when you started, is a great feeling.
But Getting Better Isn't Just About PBs
This is something we think is really important.
Getting better doesn't always mean putting more weight on the bar or beating your previous time.
Sometimes getting better means mastering the movement.
Maybe six months ago your squat wasn't very consistent. Now your technique is better, your range of motion has improved and you feel much more comfortable under the bar.
That is progress.
You might be working towards your first pull-up, improving your double-unders, learning how to move better through a squat or simply becoming more confident with movements that used to feel intimidating.
There is always something to improve.
Maybe Your Goal Is Longevity
Not everyone is training because they want to win a competition or hit a huge PB.
You might be training because you want to be strong and capable for as long as possible.
You want to be able to play with your kids, carry your shopping, climb stairs without getting out of breath, go on holiday and enjoy being active well into your later years.
In that case, getting better might mean maintaining your strength, improving your cardiovascular fitness, keeping your mobility and continuing to move well as you get older.
That's still progress.
So, How Do I Get Better?
The simple answer is keep showing up, train with intent and give yourself something to measure.
Listen to your coaches. Work on your technique. Push yourself when it's appropriate. Recover properly. And give yourself time.
Your progress might be a faster benchmark workout, a heavier lift, a new movement, better technique or simply feeling fitter and stronger in everyday life.
The important thing is that you don't have to compare yourself to anyone else.
Your biggest competition is who you were six months ago.
And that's one of the things we love about CrossFit at CrossFit Shenley. There is always another way to get better.
