Why Benchmark Workouts Matter: Measuring Progress with "The Girls"

One of the things that makes CrossFit unique is that your fitness isn't based on guesswork.

It's measured.

Every now and then, you'll see a workout appear on the whiteboard with a familiar name like Fran, Helen, Grace, or Cindy. These are known as benchmark workouts, often referred to as "The Girls."

At first, they might just seem like another workout.

In reality, they're one of the best ways to track your fitness, celebrate your progress, and keep yourself accountable.

What Are "The Girls"?

"The Girls" are a collection of classic CrossFit workouts that have been performed by millions of people around the world.

Each workout is designed to test different areas of fitness, whether that's strength, endurance, gymnastics, power, or cardiovascular capacity.

Because the workouts stay the same every time you repeat them, they provide a consistent way to measure improvement.

Think of them as fitness checkpoints.

Why Measuring Fitness Matters

Imagine trying to save money without ever checking your bank balance.

Or trying to improve at golf without keeping score.

It would be difficult to know if you were actually making progress.

Fitness works in exactly the same way.

Without measuring it, you're relying on how you feel, and feelings can often be misleading.

Benchmark workouts give you real data that shows how far you've come.

Progress Isn't Always About Going Faster

Many people think a better score simply means finishing quicker.

Sometimes that's true.

But progress can also look like:

  • Using a heavier weight than last time.

  • Completing more repetitions.

  • Needing fewer breaks.

  • Moving with better technique.

  • Scaling the workout less than before.

  • Feeling more confident throughout the session.

Improvement comes in many forms.

The goal is to become a better version of yourself, not to chase someone else's score.

Accountability Creates Results

One of the biggest reasons benchmark workouts are so valuable is accountability.

Once you've recorded your score, you have something to work towards.

The next time that workout appears, you'll have an opportunity to improve.

That doesn't mean you'll beat your previous result every single time.

Some days you'll be tired.

Some days life gets in the way.

But over months and years, those small improvements begin to add up.

Tracking your workouts keeps you focused on long-term progress instead of short-term perfection.

Compete Against Yourself

It's easy to compare yourself to the person lifting the heaviest weight or finishing first.

But that's not what benchmark workouts are about.

The most important comparison is with the person you were six months ago.

Maybe you've gone from walking through workouts to running them.

Maybe you've doubled the weight you can lift.

Maybe you've completed movements that once seemed impossible.

Those are the victories that matter most.

Small Improvements Lead to Big Changes

You don't need to knock minutes off every workout to become fitter.

Sometimes improving by just a few seconds or completing a handful of extra repetitions is a sign that your training is working.

When these improvements are repeated over months and years, they become life-changing.

Benchmark workouts remind us that progress is built one session at a time.

More Than Just a Number

While the score matters, it's not the whole story.

Every benchmark workout teaches you something.

They reveal your strengths.

They expose areas that need work.

They encourage you to set new goals.

Most importantly, they remind you that fitness is a journey, not a destination.

Why We Repeat Them

Some people wonder why we repeat the same workout more than once.

The answer is simple.

If you never revisit the same challenge, you'll never know whether you've improved.

Repeating benchmark workouts allows us to celebrate progress that might otherwise go unnoticed.

It's one of the clearest ways to see the results of your consistency and hard work.

Your Fitness, Measured

At CrossFit Shenley, we believe progress should be celebrated.

That's why we encourage members to record their scores, revisit benchmark workouts, and recognise just how far they've come.

Whether you've shaved 30 seconds off your time, lifted a heavier weight, or simply felt stronger than the last time you tackled the workout, every improvement is worth celebrating.

Because fitness isn't just about working hard.

It's about measuring your progress, holding yourself accountable, and proving to yourself that you're capable of more than you were yesterday.

The whiteboard doesn't exist to judge you.

It exists to show you just how much you're improving.
