"Everyone Will Be Watching Me" – The Gym Fear That Isn't True

One of the biggest reasons people never walk through the doors of a gym isn't because they don't want to get fitter.

It's because they think everyone inside will be watching them.

They imagine people judging how much they can lift, how fast they run, or whether they know what they're doing.

The reality couldn't be more different.

Everyone Started Somewhere

Every confident member you see today was once a beginner.

They remember what it felt like to walk into a gym for the first time, not knowing anyone or wondering if they were fit enough to be there.

Nobody is born knowing how to squat, lift weights, or use gym equipment. We all have a first day.

People Are Too Busy Thinking About Themselves

Here's something that often surprises new members.

Most people aren't paying attention to what you're doing because they're too busy thinking about their own workout.

They're trying to remember the next movement, catch their breath, or beat their previous score. They're focused on their own progress, not judging yours.

In fact, they're probably far more worried about how they look than how you do.

A Good Gym Wants You to Succeed

At CrossFit Shenley, seeing someone new walk through the door is one of the best parts of our day.

We know how much courage it takes to start something new, and we never take that for granted.

Our members remember their own first class, so they're often the first people to introduce themselves, offer encouragement, and celebrate your achievements.

You're Not Competing With Anyone Else

One of the biggest misconceptions about CrossFit is that you're expected to keep up with everyone else.

That's not how it works.

Every workout is scaled to your ability, meaning you'll train at a level that's right for you. Whether you're lifting an empty barbell or an experienced athlete is lifting much heavier weights, you're both working towards the same goal—becoming a little better than yesterday.

The only person you're competing with is the version of yourself that walked through the door.

Encouragement, Not Judgement

One of the things people notice most after their first class is the atmosphere.

Instead of judgement, they find encouragement.

Instead of feeling out of place, they realise everyone wants them to succeed.

You'll often hear people cheering for the last person to finish the workout because effort is respected far more than ability.

Showing up is something worth celebrating.

Your First Step Is the Hardest

Walking through the door is often the biggest challenge.

Once you're inside, you'll quickly realise that the fears you've built up in your mind don't match reality.

You'll be welcomed, coached through every movement, and supported by people who genuinely want to see you improve.

We Love Seeing New Faces

There's nothing better than watching someone who was nervous on day one become confident a few months later.

Seeing people move better, feel healthier, and discover what they're capable of is why we do what we do.

If you've been putting off joining because you're worried about being judged, remember this:

Nobody is expecting you to be perfect.

Nobody expects you to know everything.

We simply want to see you take that first step.

Because everyone deserves the chance to become healthier, stronger, and more confident—and we'd love to be part of that journey.
