Why Can't I Stay Consistent?

You start with the best intentions. You train three or four times in a week, eat well, feel great and think, “This time I'm going to stick to it.”
Then life gets busy.
Work gets stressful. The kids need you. You go away for the weekend. You miss a couple of sessions, and suddenly a couple of weeks have passed.
So why is staying consistent so difficult?
Motivation Isn't Enough
The problem is that motivation isn't always there. Some days you will be excited to train, and other days the last thing you want to do is put your trainers on.
If your whole plan relies on motivation, you're probably going to struggle. Consistency comes from having the right environment, the right people around you and something that keeps you accountable.
You Need Somewhere You Want to Come To
This is one of the things we really value at CrossFit Shenley.
We want the gym to be somewhere you want to come to, not somewhere you feel like you have to go.
You know your coaches. You know the people you train with. You start to build friendships and become part of the community. When people know you are normally there at 6pm on a Tuesday, it becomes much harder to disappear for three weeks without anyone noticing!
And that's a good thing.
Have a Goal
It's much easier to stay consistent when you know what you're working towards.
Maybe you want to lose some weight. Maybe you want to get stronger, improve your fitness or achieve your first pull-up. Maybe you simply want to feel healthier and more capable.
Whatever your goal is, having something to work towards gives your training a purpose.
We Help Keep You Accountable
That's why we have our Goal Review system at CrossFit Shenley.
Your goals shouldn't be something you talk about once when you join and then forget about. We want to check in with you, see how you're progressing and make sure your training is still moving you in the right direction.
Sometimes you'll be flying. Sometimes you'll need to change the plan. Sometimes life will have got in the way.
That's okay.
The important thing is that we can recognise it and work out what you need to do next.
Consistency Doesn't Mean Perfect
You are going to miss sessions. You're going to have holidays, busy weeks, late nights and weekends where your nutrition goes completely out the window.
That's life.
Being consistent doesn't mean never missing a workout. It means getting back to it when you do.
One missed session doesn't matter. Turning one missed session into three months away from the gym does.
Find Somewhere You Enjoy
If you constantly have to force yourself to go somewhere, eventually you'll stop going.
Find an environment you enjoy. Find coaches you trust. Find people you enjoy training with. Give yourself goals that actually mean something to you.
Then keep showing up.
That's how you build consistency.
And that's what we want CrossFit Shenley to be: a place you want to come to, with people who know you, goals that matter to you and a team that helps keep you accountable.
